GRAY – The start of Friday night’s game between Cape Elizabeth and Gray New-Gloucester was delayed as the light tower at the far end of the field was not operating.
Once the lights did come on, Tom Foden and the rest of Cape Elizabeth’s high-powered offense went to work as Cape Elizabeth posted a 48-0 victory over Gray-New Gloucester.
On the second play from scrimmage, Cam Smith caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jim Bump for a quick 6-0 lead.
Cape Elizabeth (6-0) wasted little time finding the end zone again.
After holding the Patriots on downs, Foden scored his first of four scores on a 32-yard run to give the Capers a 13-0 advantage just three minutes gone in the game.
The first period came to an end with another Foden touchdown run – from 8 yards – for a 22-0 lead after the first period.
Gray-New Gloucester’s defense stiffened in the second quarter, which led to its best scoring opportunity. The Patriots (0-5) drove the ball to the Cape Elizabeth 20-yard line before a penalty stalled any hopes of scoring for the Patriots.
“We went up early, and usually when you have young teams like (Gray-New Gloucester), that’s all you have to do,” said Cape Elizabeth coach Aaron Filios. “But in the second quarter, they played us real tough.”
Matt Weiss scored the only touchdown of the second quarter to increase the cushion to 28-0 by halftime.
Foden opened the third quarter with a 63-yard burst on Cape Elizabeth’s first series.
Then, after the defense held the Patriots without a first down on their next series, Foden scooted 50 yards for his final touchdown on the ensuing punt return.
Reserve quarterback Ezra Wolfinger rounded out the scoring for the Capers late in the fourth quarter.
