JAY – Dylan Brandt rushed for 181 yards on 24 rushes and scored two touchdons as Boothbay started strong and never looked back for a convincing 38-8 victory over Jay in a Class C Campbell Conference football game.
The teams were coming off mixed results. Jay had crushed Lisbon 41-14, while Boothbay lost its first game of the year to unbeaten Winthrop.
Boothbay was effective with executing its double-wing offense and scored on drives of 74 and 95 yards. Brandt was the workhorse, gaining 125 yards in the first half. Shawn McDuff and Tim Stover scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards.
“We returned to the basics,” Boothbay coach Tim Rice said. “Last week was awful, and we didn’t deserve to win, but tonight the kids executed. Jay has a good team with good athletes, and they are capable of doing some good things.”
The Tigers were led by Nick Bourassa (72 yards, 24 rushes) and quarterback Austin Clark (91 yards, 10 rushes.) Boothbay effectively controlled the time of possession, preventing the Tigers from mounting a comeback.
Each team scored on its initial possession. Seahawks quarterback Sam Cook directed a long drive, which culminated in McDuff’s burst over the right side.
Starting on its own 40, Jay scored on its first play when Clark sprinted down the right sideline for a 60-yard touchdown run. Bourassa rushed the conversion to tie the game 8-8.
On the ensuing possession, Stover (89 yards, 25 rushes) scored to cap a 76-yard drive. Jay ran one play in seven minutes and the Seahawks’ Steve Alexander recovered a fumble when Clark was hit.
“We came in wanting to (redeem) ourselves after Winthrop,” Brandt said, who also rushed for four conversions. “We ran the basics and got back to running Seahawk football. I had fumbled three times last week and the team gave me a nickname. Tonight, I kept both hands on the ball.”
A Clark punt pinned Boothbay on its 5-yard line. The Seahawks shattered the Tigers’ hopes by marching 95 yards on 11 plays.
Jay had two possessions in the third quarter. On its best opportunity, two penalties turned a fourth-and-3 into long yardage, and Clark couldn’t connect with receiver Justin Shrink.
“Our defense came up big,” Rice said. “I think discipline was a key. We had to contain Bourassa.”
