LEWISTON – Members of all area veterans’ associations and the public are invited to attend memorial services at noon Saturday, Oct. 27, at Veterans Memorial Park, commemorating the anniversaries of the terrorist bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps Barrack in Beirut, Lebanon on Oct. 23, 1983, and the terrorist bombing of the U.S.S. Cole at a refueling dock in Yemen on Oct. 12, 2000.
U.S. Marines and Naval personnel numbering 241 died in the bombing of their barracks in Beirut and 17 crew members of the U.S.S. Cole died in the bombing of their ship on in Yemen.
The program will open with singing of the National Anthem followed by invocation by Douglas Taylor.
The history of the U.S. Marine Corps will be given by Past Commandant Roland Cyr, Central Maine Detachment, Marine Corps League, and the history of the U.S. Navy by Jerry DerBoghosian, president emeritus of the U.S.S. Canberra Association.
Past Commander Gerald LaBrie, American Legion Post 22, will read a proclamation especially for the service. Those assembled will sing the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy service songs.
Richard LeBlanc, bugler, will play “Taps” and the program will end with “God Bless America” sung by the assembly.
