When you think of a middle school civil rights team, you might think of 7th and 8th graders talking about how freedom of speech came to be one of the amendments, but Lewiston Middle School chooses to do things a little differently.
The Civil Rights Team is run by Shayna Malyata. She is an eighth grade language arts teacher at LMS. She wants kids to build their leadership and teamwork skills while having fun.
This year Mrs. Malyata says the kids are going to do a variety of different activities- movie nights, a world café, go to conferences in Augusta, and even do activities with the Center for Prevention of Hate Violence. The team is also going to go to Camp Kieve. They will do many activities to help them build their leadership and teamwork skills. Some students are also going to have a chance to be involved in a video project on Race and Equality with Bates College students.
With all these great ideas, the LMS Civil Rights Team is going to have a great year.
