RUMFORD – A man accused of trying to kill his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend in Rumford in May was arrested Tuesday night on charges of violating bail conditions and violating a protection from abuse order.
It was the second time in a month that Dwight Knox, 38, of Rumford and Jay was charged with violating bail conditions and the third time that he’s gotten into trouble with police after failing to stay away from his ex-girlfriend.
Knox turned himself in to Patrolman Douglas Maifeld at the police station at 6:37 p.m. Tuesday and was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris. He will be arraigned Dec. 4 in Rumford District Court.
“These were violations that occurred over a period of time,” Sgt. David Bean said Wednesday evening. “He didn’t report a change of address and was to have no contact with his ex-girlfriend.”
On Sept. 23, Livermore Falls police arrested Knox on a charge of violating bail conditions for drinking alcohol. He served two days in Androscoggin County Jail and was released.
Knox is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and trying to slit the throat of her sleeping boyfriend with a knife on May 13. He was charged with attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault, burglary, violation of a protection order and violation of conditions of release.
According to Rumford District Court documents in Knox’s file, his ex-girlfriend got a temporary protection from abuse order against him on March 23, the day she filed a complaint. After a final hearing on April 10, a two-year protection from abuse order was issued.
On June 5, four days after Knox was released on $50,000 real estate bail posted by a Cornish woman, Knox’s ex-girlfriend filed a motion to terminate the protection order. However, when she failed to appear for the hearing on June 12, a Rumford District Court judge ruled that the April 10 protection order would remain in place.
At his arraignment on July 9, Knox pleaded not guilty to the charges in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
Knox has criminal convictions in Maine, including five for assault dating back to 1997, and criminal threatening.
The original Rumford case is awaiting completion of lab results before being placed on the Superior Court trial list.
