LITCHFIELD – When Rep. Nancy E. Smith (D-Monmouth) learned that the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer was planning a first-ever golf tournament at the Meadows she determined not only to support them in every way she could but also to learn how to play golf. So she formed a team of four that included Rep. Mark Samson (D-Auburn) and teed off with the 29 other teams on Sept. 29.
She attended the luncheon where Gov. John Baldacci (who had also formed a team) presented the Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Proclamation.
Smith said she was thrilled that the coalition raised $6,000 at the event and applauded the volunteers who had made the event a reality.
The Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer promotes awareness and encourages screening in the effort to detect the cancer in its early stage. For more information or to locate a PC support group, call Nelson Leavitt, president, MCFPC, at 623-5375.
At the conclusion of the tournament, prizes were awarded. Preparation for the golf tournament were headed by Senior Circuit Player Ron Moody and his cadre of volunteers.
