AUBURN – Tambrands Inc. is moving the production of some of its Tampax tampon products from a plant in Budapest, Hungary, to the Auburn plant, the company announced Friday.

That’s right, folks – you heard it correctly. Despite the prevalence of outsourcing in many industries, Tambrands – a subsidiary of Proctor & Gamble Co. – will be adding production lines and moving production volume from Hungary to Maine.

The increase in Tampax production won’t lead to more jobs, External Relations Manager Rick Malinowski said Friday. “We’ve worked real hard to become more efficient. We’ve done things to make the work easier and quicker, so we can pick up some additional work.”

The additional lines – requiring installation of new equipment – will, however, bring increased security to Auburn’s Tambrands plant, which is the largest employer in the city. “I think it’s great for the future of the site. The more production volume we can bring here, the more secure we are,” Malinowski said.

“State-initiated programs such as Pine Tree Development Zones and business equipment tax elimination were important factors in the company’s decision to move the production volume to Maine,” Site Manager Veronica Vargas said in a news release. “We are committed to our business in Maine, which is the sole supplier of Tampax for North America.”

But the move is also due to the hard work and commitment shown by the approximately 500 Auburn workers, Malinowski said. “You know you’re doing well when the company moves volume to you instead of away,” he said.
