WALES – Just five days removed from perhaps its biggest win this decade, Oak Hill was hoping to catch a rusty Camden Hills squad back on its heels Wednesday night.

It was the defending Eastern Class B champions that acted as the aggressor, though, playing wave after wave of physical defense to end Oak Hill’s hopes of pulling off yet another upset.

Thirteen different Windjammers got into the scorebook as Camden Hills flustered Oak Hill early with its defensive pressure and cruised to a 79-27 victory to remain unbeaten on the season.

Senior guard Paul Campbell, one of three starters left over from last year’s squad which lost to Mountain Valley in the state final, finished with a game-high 12 points. He also tallied seven steals, five assists and a pair of blocks. The other holdovers, junior forward Gordon Fischer and senior guard Christian Pieri, finished with 11 and seven points, respectively.

“Obviously, we lost some important seniors, but we’ve had guys step up and then some,” said Camden Hills coach Jeff Hart. “This is as much depth as I’ve ever had with this team. We’re going to try to play a style that allows us to use them and be efficient that way.”

The Windjammers (7-0) weren’t very efficient early, nearly matching the Raiders turnover for turnover in a first quarter that saw 15 such miscues. Oak Hill’s Tim Levesque set up Nick Brown for a bucket that tied the game at 4-4. Camden closed the quarter with a 14-0 run, triggered by three straight turnovers that led to a pair of hoops by Campbell and a three-point play by Pieri.

Camden’s bench, led by freshman Graham Safford (nine points) and sophomore Jimmy Weferling (seven points), continued to pour it on in the second quarter. They held the Raiders without a field goal until Chad Bussiere’s tip-in with 2:48 left in the period made it 26-8. Oak Hill shot just 19 percent from the field in the first half.

“You’ve got to come with that effort every night,” Hart said. “We didn’t play over Christmas at all, so it’s been since (December) 22 that we’ve been in a game situation. So I was happy with our play tonight even though we were a little rusty at the beginning.”

“These guys are definitely the cream of the crop,” said Oak Hill coach Bruce Nicholas. “You show up and wonder how close you can play with a team like this. We’re still quite a ways away.”

The Raiders thought they were a little closer after last Friday, when they stunned Gardiner, 59-57, behind the 3-point shooting of Bronson Drewry. Drewry finished with a team-high nine points against Camden Hills, but didn’t hit a single 3-pointer. Shawn Greenier (five points) made the Raiders’ only 3-point shot in six first-half attempts, mainly because the Windjammers were challenging the Raiders heavily on the perimeter, blocking a number of their shots.

“They were playing us pretty physical, and our guards aren’t used to that,” he added. “We’re still young in that regard, especially in the backcourt.”
