• At the meeting of Kora Temple, Mystic Shrine, Friday evening the report of the building committee was heard and the two propositions put were accepted, and it was unanimously voted to build a temple on the lot now owned by the Shrine on Sabattus Street. The building will cost about $55,000.

• A 15-pound son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Davis of South Lewiston Wednesday night.

• NORTH AUBURN – Farm buildings situated on the Staples Road and owned and occupied by Myron S. Robinson were burned to the ground this afternoon. The fire caught around the chimney and was well underway when discovered. The loss is estimated at about $800.

50 years ago, 1958

• The gas war is still on in the Twin Cities, and it’s in earnest with prices down as low as 23.4 cents a gallon for regular gas.

• Got any old skates you don’t want? Lewiston firemen, who annually take in old skates and repair them for distribution to needy children, report they are out of skates at the present time while they have received several requests for them.

• Powdery snow, blowing like flour before 45-mph winds, drifted blocked sidewalks and outlying streets in the Twin Cities yesterday. Both Lewiston and Auburn had plows out all day fighting the drifting snow.

25 years ago, 1983

AUGUSTA – Testimony was heard before the Health and Institutional Services Committee on a bill calling for a ban on smoking in portions of retail-food stores and restaurants and the creation of no-smoking sections in both.

AUGUSTA – A public hearing on a proposal to create a Maine-owned business logo is scheduled to be held here Tuesday afternoon in the Statehouse.
