Black Labrador retrievers Gracie, left, and Ogden wait patiently on the westbound shoulder of Route 2 in Hanover on Thursday afternoon after the eastbound 2001 Ford Explorer they were riding in took a few spins on black ice and whacked a guardrail on all four sides. Owner and driver Peter Goodwin, 62, of Bridgewater, N.H., stands with the dogs behind a family friend. Neither the dogs, Goodwin or his wife, Constance, 59, were injured, but their SUV at left center was believed totaled, according to Maine State Trooper Ronald Turnick. On Ogden’s 9th birthday, the Goodwins were headed to their log cabin in Eustis for a weekend of skiing at Sugarloaf/USA. Traffic was stopped in both directions for about 30 minutes until salt and sand trucks treated the highway.
