BUCKFIELD – High School Music Director Ethan Wright orchestrated 19 music and drama students into a fast-moving, rousing portrayal of the musical, “Into the Woods.”

The play, performed over the weekend, wove several fairy tales into a complicated story that ended with this advice: “Be careful what you wish for.”

The theme centered on the efforts of the baker and his wife, played by Chad Allen and Savannah Wescott, to have a child. The baker had been cursed by the witch, played by Hannah Perry, because his father had stolen the witch’s magic beans. He needed a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as fine as corn silk and a slipper of gold to break the spell.

Jack, played by Cameron Allen, had to sell his beloved white cow for a few beans to the baker.

Red Riding Hood, played by Marjorie Swanson sporting a bright red cape, was off through the woods to see her grandmother.

Rapunzel, played by Mandy Swanson, lived in a tower and had the hair the baker needed.

Cinderella, played by Brittany Wiley, had the golden slipper, of course.

The production was laced with comments from narrator Joseph Hooper. The actors all assumed their roles with conviction.

Attendees were obviously impressed and due to the excellent sound system, laughed heartily as they caught the irony in the lines so professionally delivered by the actors.

Proud parents, relatives, friends and locals packed the school auditorium for the four performances over the weekend. Carol Perry, who had three granddaughters performing, saw the show twice.

Other actors in the play were Vincent Leighton, Kaitlyn Rines, Zachary Leavitt, Megan Dyke, Hailey Perry, Dakota Warren, Hillary Perry, Jessica Cooper, Sean Kindya, Megan Boucher and Jordan Brant.

The orchestra was composed of local and retired teachers and high school students. Meghan Andrews-Wright was music director and producer.
