LEWISTON – The Central Maine Medical Center Rotating Art Gallery will feature two local artists during May: Kathy Cain of Auburn and Deb Emery of New Gloucester.

Cain grew up in Vermont. She attended the University of Vermont where she received degrees in art education and nursing.

She has worked as a medical illustrator for research done at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Vermont.

Some of her work has been published in medical journals and textbooks.

Her early works focused on painting and drawing, and she would often use photographs as the models.

As time went on, Cain developed a creative interest in the photographs themselves. That inspired her to take photography courses through Auburn Adult Education and at Central Maine Community College.

Cain has developed an interest in the use of filters in her photography to create an emotional context to her subjects. She finds it rewarding to discover the “everyday” beauty.

She has photographs on display at the Central Maine Orthopedics office building and she won a blue ribbon in the 2006 Maine Sportsman’s Show wildlife photography contest landscape category.

She has not abandoned her fine arts background, and she hopes to have some original paintings on display in her next show.

Cain has lived in Auburn for 20 years, where she and her husband, Paul, raised their family. She enjoys golf and is an avid ice skater. She is the former director of the Auburn Learn to Skate Program, a position that she held for 13 years.

She now looks forward to exploring New England and beyond through the eyes of her camera.

Emery enjoyed photography and painting in her younger days when she took photos of flowers, bees and other close-ups.

She said, “Everything stopped when the kids came along and my camera sat patiently and waited.”

Around 2001, she became getting involved with trains, as her husband worked for the Springfield Terminal Railway.

Emery said, “My son and I used to go see the trains rumble through town, and I found out that the railroad company had a yearly calendar in which the employees could contribute photos.

I decided to dig out the camera to see if they would accept photos from an employee’s family as well, and they welcomed me with open arms.”

She said, “I have had at least one and mostly two photos in their calendar ever since. I really enjoy photographing trains as you have to try to ‘catch’ them first! I hadn’t seen many train pictures at the hospital display in the past and thought maybe it might be a unique display.”

The gallery is sponsored by the Woman’s Hospital Association.
