TOPSHAM – The Oratorio Chorale, under the direction of Peter Frewen, will offer joyous music by Puccini and Beethoven Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Orion Performing Arts Center in Topsham and at 3 p.m. Sunday at State Street Church in Portland.

The year 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Puccini, a perfect opportunity to present his “Messa di Gloria,” composed when Puccini was only 22 years old. Frewen describes the piece as “joyous and utterly engaging.”

Beethoven’s Mass in C Major is a lyrical and uplifting composition.

The Maine Chamber Ensemble and soloists Bonnie Scarpelli, Sara Sturdivant, Timothy Neill Johnson and Peter Allen will join the chorale in this final concert of its 2007-2008 season.

Tickets are $15 in advance; $20 at door; students, half-price; children under 12, free. Tickets are available at Starbird Music and Longfellow Books in Portland, Books Etc. in Falmouth, Clayton’s in Yarmouth, Gulf of Maine Bookstore in Brunswick, Mason Street Mercantile and Magnolia in Bath, Treats in Wiscasset and The Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta.
