HARWICH, Mass. – Anthony D’Alfonso had three hits and drove in three runs to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 16-7 victory over Castleton State in the 2008 NCAA Regional Tournament on Thursday.
The Huskies (33-13) built a 9-0 lead on the strength of an eight-run second inning, then watched as the Spartans (22-20) rallied back with sevens runs in the sixth. Southern Maine iced the decision with seven runs in the eighth inning.
Eddie Skeffington chipped in for the Huskies with three hits, while Chris Burleson, Collin Henry and Andrew Stacy added two hits each. Sabattus native Mike Eaton picked up his third win of 2008 with three shutout innings of relief.
Brad Polcare and Ted Mills led the Spartans with two hits each. Polcare belted a three-run double in the Spartans’ sixth-inning uprising that pulled them back within two after being down 9-0.
Worcester State 14, St. Joseph’s 4
HARWICH, Mass. – The Worcester State baseball squad put an end to St. Joseph’s 2008 campaign Thursday, rolling to a 14-4 victory in the second day of the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Worcester put up eight runs in the first inning and never relinquished the pressure. Stephan Gorsun and Todd Keneborus both had RBIs for the Monks (28-18), while starter Pat Moran was saddled with the loss.
In their final game at St. Joe’s, Andrew Wood and Dustin Spiller added two hits apiece.
