PORTLAND – Bubba Bell had four hits, including his team-leading seventh home run of the season, as the Portland Sea Dogs out-slugged the New Britain Rock Cats, 15-11, Monday at Hadlock Field.
Bell’s three-run homer in the third inning started the scoring, as the Sea Dogs pounded Rock Cats’ pitching for 20 hits.
Portland (30-19) broke the game open with a season-high 10 runs in the fifth inning. Sandy Madera hit a three-run homer to begin the scoring, while Mark Wagner added a two-run double and Tony Granadillo, who had two hits in the frame, added a two-run double of his own.
The 10-run inning was the most in one frame for the Sea Dogs since May 21, 2006, when Portland scored 11 runs in the eighth inning against New Hampshire.
Granadillo and Zach Daeges collected three hits apiece for the Sea Dogs. Reliever Kyle Jackson picked up the win to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Starter Matt Goodson lasted just 3 2/3 innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits, three walks and a strikeout. Chad Rhoades and Beau Vaughan pitched the final 3 1/3 innings as the Sea Dogs took three out of four from the Rock Cats.
