BETHEL – Even though she’s been reduced to a giant inverted cone of dirty snow and ice, Olympia, Bethel’s giant snow woman, was finally recognized by Guinness.

On Friday the 13th, no less, the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce received the official Guinness World Record notification that the community’s 122-foot, 1-inch snow woman established a new world record.

She beats out Bethel’s previous world-record snowman, Angus, King of the Mountain, which was built in 1999 and stood 113 feet, 7 inches tall.

After work was completed on Olympia on Feb. 26, chamber officials promptly filed the required Guinness paperwork, chamber Executive Director Robin Zinchuk stated in a late Friday afternoon report.

However, due to the thousands of requests that Guinness receives each month, it took nearly 14 weeks to process the application.

During that time, she melted to a mere remnant of her former self, standing nearly 20 feet tall amidst a sea of plush green grass.

“Remnants of the snow woman remind us of what a tremendous effort she was,” Zinchuk stated.

Her pendant, which was designed and built by local jeweler, Jim Mann, is on display in the chamber office.
