Teen project

AUBURN – Teens can join Sally Holt, teen librarian at Auburn Public Library, and environmental educator Susan Hayward for a guided walk through one of Lewiston-Auburn’s favorite outdoor spots, Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary in Lewiston, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 2.

They will learn about the preserve’s ecology, history and strategies to protect its wild denizens while helping to maintain the park by clearing brush from stone walls. Meet at the park entrance at 10 a.m., dress for the woods and bring work gloves. Water and a snack will be provided. Space is limited.

To register or for more information, e-mail Holt at [email protected] or call the library reference desk at 333-6640, ext. 4.

Chicken barbecue

GRAY – Gray Fire-Rescue is preparing for its annual chicken barbecue dinner to be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 2.

The dinners can be picked up at 125 Shaker Road. Dinners of a half-chicken will include coleslaw, chips and rolls with butter.

Although the department is planning on preparing about 325 dinners, the dinners usually sell out by mid-afternoon. This is the 43rd year the department has produced the dinners.

Over the last couple of years, the department has replaced all the barbecues. The cooks use grills that clamp the half-chickens from both sides to quickly flip them for even cooking. The grills sit atop 250-gallon barrels filled with charcoal, and need two people to flip them.
