SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) – A 65-year-old Narragansett man has drowned while swimming with his dog on Tucker Pond.

John Collins, 65, was swimming in the pond Friday when he suddenly disappeared underwater. The dog returned to shore without him.

Collins’ wife spotted him in the water and swam out, but was unable to rescue him. She told the Providence Journal that Collins was an experienced swimmer who swam with the family dog every day.

Collins was eventually pulled to shore by a local volunteer firefighter.
