OTISFIELD – A special election will be held next week to fill a vacancy on the Board of Selectmen after the resignation of Mark Cyr.
The election will take place at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4 at the Otisfield Community Hall, followed by a regular selectmen’s meeting. Candidates will be chosen from the floor, and the elected person will serve the remaining two years of Cyr’s term.
Cyr announced his resignation via letter at the board’s meeting on Wednesday. The resignation is effective immediately.
Cyr stated that he is unable to continue serving the position due to a career change that has required him to be out of the state or country over the past month. Marianne Izzo-Morin, administrative assistant to the board, said Cyr will be working for Irving Oil in New Hampshire and Canada.
Cyr formerly worked for C.N. Brown Co.
“I have always believed that in order to serve the community, someone who is elected must be able to make a commitment to do so at a very high level,” stated Cyr. “Initially with the career change, I was hopeful to serve out my term. However, I now realize that with this change I cannot commit as I have in the past to the community.”
According to Sun Journal archives, Cyr was elected to the board in 2004 after serving two years on the town’s Planning Board. He was re-elected to a three-year term in 2007.
Attempts to reach Cyr were unsuccessful Monday.
