DETROIT – Mark Teixeira’s ninth-inning sacrifice fly gave the Los Angeles Angels a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.

Torii Hunter drove in three run for Los Angeles, which reduced its magic number to clinch the AL West to eight.

Miguel Cabrera hit his third home run in three days and drove in three runs for Detroit, which has lost seven of nine.

Fernando Rodney (0-4) walked Chone Figgins to lead off the ninth. Figgins then stole his third base of the game and went to third on a groundout. Teixeira’s fly ball to center made it 5-4.

Cabrera’s homer, his 31st, off Scot Shields (6-4) tied it at 4 with two outs in the eighth. It was the first run the Angels’ bullpen allowed since Aug. 22, a span of 29 2-3 innings.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 54th save in 59 chances. The all-time record of 57 is held by Bobby Thigpen, who set it in 1990 with the Chicago White Sox.
