PARIS – William E. Winslow has been named Veteran of the Month at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris.

Winslow was born on June 15, 1927, and grew up in Chatham, N.H. He entered the Navy on Aug. 14, 1944, and served aboard the USS Ebert DE out of Gulfport, Miss. The Ebert was the first diesel to electric ship in the Navy fleet.

Winslow was a motor machinist mate third class. The Ebert sailed into Tokyo Bay at the end of the war and Winslow was among the sailors who went ashore.

Winslow said his memories of that time include a ship visit to the Hawaiian Islands where the sailors could rent surfboards for 50 cents a day. Winslow was assigned to pilot the captain’s launch whenever the ship went into port.

He received the American Theater Medal, Philippine Liberation Theater Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal. Winslow was discharged on June 16, 1946.

After the war, he worked as a woodsman. He and his wife, Jobyna, raised a son and daughter and have four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Winslow went to the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris in February of 2006. He enjoys reading and going for walks outside. He resides on the B Unit.
