LEWISTON – It wasn’t so long ago that Lewiston would be a little worried about facing a passing offense such as the one Cony brought to Don Roux Field Friday night.

The Blue Devils don’t appear to have such qualms anymore.

Lewiston picked off three first-half passes, returning one for a touchdown, to spark a dominating defensive effort and post a 29-6 win over the Rams.

Wesley Myers rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, and Chuck Faletra collected two interceptions, returning the second one 70 yards for a score in the second quarter.

“For the first time in many years, we’re pretty good against the pass,” Lewiston coach Bill County said. “We’ve had three picks for touchdowns so far this season. We thought coming into this if we could do a good job stopping the run game and make them spread the field and throw it that that would be to our advantage.”

It helped that the offense, after the defense held Cony to a three-and-out on the opening drive, put the Rams in an immediate hole with a crisp 11-play, 64-yard scoring drive. QB Ronnie Turner capped it with a 2-yard sneak over the goal line. Myers added the two-point run to make it 8-0.

“Offensively, those first two drives that ended up in points were huge for us,” County said. “And they were pretty nuts-and-bolts drives. We threw the ball a couple of times to keep them honest, but I thought it was just good, old fashioned football.”

Cony QB Nic Lucas (18-for-31, 114 yards) had limited success early with short, safe passes. The first time he tried to go downfield, Faletra made the grab at Cony’s 35 and returned it to the Rams’ 11. Myers scored from there on the next play and added the conversion to put the Devils up, 16-0.

The Rams crossed midfield for the first time on their next possession, driving to the Lewiston 33. That’s when Faletra jumped an out route by Ray Cotnoir in the right flat, picked off Lucas’ pass and raced down the Lewiston sideline for six to make it 22-0 late in the first half.

“I was seeing the ball well tonight,” Faletra said. “We practiced their ‘stay’ pass all week, and we played it well all night.”

“It was funny. Sometimes those things happen right in front of you. I was standing on the sideline right in front of him and I said before the snap, ‘Chuck, he’s going to throw the ball right over here,'” County said with a chuckle. “Chuck timed it very well. I kidded him at the end. I wasn’t sure he had enough speed to score.”

Myers made it three-for-three for the Blue Devil ‘D’ when he picked off Lucas on Cony’s next possession. He later added his second touchdown on a 14-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Cony finally got on the board late in the game against mostly second-string Lewiston defenders on a two-yard plunge by Chris Robinson.
