Edward Little’s cross country teams got shut out of the state team championship next week in Belfast, edged out by one point in the girls’ race by rival Lewiston.

It didn’t help, of course, that two of Edward Little’s top five runners missed the race with injuries, but not all is lost for the Eddies.

Senior Hannah Hart and junior Stephanie Elwell will represent the school at the meet in Belfast next week as individuals, having earned that right by finishing in the top 20 in Saturday’s regional championships.

On the boys’ side, Tyler Gammon earned a berth in the regionals, too, placing 12th to race his way in.

Doing their best

Mt. Blue had every intention of putting a scare into Brewer in the Class A girls’ race at the Eastern regional championships Saturday. They came out firing, too.

“We had five girls with low personal records,” Mt. Blue coach Kelley Cullenberg said. “You can’t do anything else than do that and hope for the best.”

Brief Start

Poland’s Jen Baril got on the soccer field one final time last Monday. The senior forward was a starter in the regular season finale against Sacopee Valley.

Baril didn’t play long. Immediately after fielding the ball to start the game, the Knights kicked the ball out of bounds, and Baril hobbled off.

“I tried my hardest,” joked Baril as she was given her crutches and headed to the bench.

Baril injured her knee in the second game of the season and has been out the rest of the year following surgery. Still on crutches and wearing a brace, Poland gave Baril the opportunity to start in the last home game, even for just a moment.

“It was the last game and last opportunity to leave the field on her own terms,” said coach Aaron Rand.

Poland managed to eke into the playoffs, finishing 10th in Western B. The Knights tied their record for five wins in a season, despite losing one of their top players up front.

“She was most of our offense last year,” said Rand of Baril. “Kelsie Taylor had something like 12 of our 20 goals. Who knows if we’d have had Jen to go with that.”

Taylor added three more in Friday’s 4-0 win over Livermore Falls/Jay. The Knights get a playoff rematch with Falmouth, a team that beat Poland 5-0 last year.

“We gave up four in the first half,” said Rand. “We finally settled down. It was our first time going there in the postseason. This time, we’re a little more prepared and know what to expect.”

Injury Free

The defending Class C boys’ soccer state champions are looking like their old selves again. St. Dom’s finished with 11 wins and earned the second seed in Western C. St. Dom’s was plagued by injury for much of the year. Now just junior defender Garrett Darnell is out with a broken leg.

After a convincing 4-1 win over Class B Fryeburg, the Saints feel good about their chances at repeating.

“We don’t have too many kids out with injuries like we did at the beginning of the season,” said senior forward Matt Barlion. “We should be pretty solid.
