LEWISTON – More than 2,500 people walked through the turnstiles at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday.
Seventeen goals, 12 Lewiston penalty-kills, 52 Drummondville shots, two ejections and one lopsided loss later, those who remained left the building scratching their heads, having witnessed one of the more bizarre games ever played at the venerable rink.
Ten different Drummondville skaters scored – three of them twice – to lead the Voltigeurs to a 13-4 drubbing of the Lewiston Maineiacs.
“I didn’t have the boys prepared to play,” Maineiacs’ coach Ed Harding said, “That was the bottom line. I’ve got to do a better job.”
The loss is the most lopsided in the Maineiacs’ history, and the 13 goals allowed are the most – by six – allowed at home in the Maineiacs’ five-plus years of existence. The previous mark of seven was set in December of 2004, when Lewiston allowed seven goals to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
“In 10 years, I’ve seen something like this happen before, and it’s happened to me as a coach,” Drummondville coach Guy Boucher said. “Even top-notch teams have that happen once or twice a year. It happens, and tonight we were on the good side of it.”
Mike Hoffman, Yannick Riendeau and Philippe Lefebvre scored twice each for the Volts, who have lost four games in regulation this season, three of which have come to division-leading Shawinigan.
After an outburst of six goals through 31-plus minutes of play, the Volts were sitting pretty, ahead 6-1. Lewiston forward Danick Paquette was tossed after the first period for a hard slash, for which he received a major and a misconduct.
“You have to control your emotions,” Harding said.
The Maineiacs, meanwhile, were more deflated than the Michelin Man after a nap on a bed of nails.
“The last part of the second period, we turned away from what we do best,” Boucher said. “We started to stickhandle at the blue line, tried to be fancy and all of a sudden, we gave them wind.”
After killing off Drummondville’s 10th power play of the game and a few big hits, Lewiston sprang to life.
Pier-Olivier Morin responded to a Drummondville goal with his second of the season at 11:50 to close the gap to 6-2, and 48 seconds later, Billy Lacasse reduced the deficit to three with his second score of the game.
In a move determined before the end of the second period, Harding lifted Lewiston keeper Peter Delmas following the second period in favor of Philip Wright.
“Peter was ready to battle right to the end,” Harding said. “He was battling hard tonight. He saw a lot of shots.”
Four of the Volts’ first five shots in the third period – all in the first 2:44 – eluded Wright, and the rout was on.
“Peter Delmas wasn’t going to stop those pucks, either,” Harding said. “They were odd-man rushes and great shots.”
Lewiston defenseman Michael Ward became the second player ejected, receiving a major and misconduct for an awkward hit along the back boards in the third period.
Lucas Labelle notched a goal at 3:07 of the third for the Maineiacs’ final goal and Drummondville added three more in the latter stages.
The same two teams hit the ice at the Colisee this afternoon at 4 p.m.
“We’ll be up all night working on the game plan for (Sunday),” Harding said.
