MILWAUKEE – Paul Pierce scored 28 points, Ray Allen added 27 and the pair accounted for all nine points in overtime, lifting the Boston Celtics to a scrappy 102-97 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night.
Allen and Pierce were without the final member of the Big Three, Kevin Garnett, down the stretch after he fouled out midway through overtime, but still managed to give the Celtics their sixth straight win over Milwaukee.
Neither team scored for the first 21/2 minutes of overtime until Garnett, who had 15 points and seven rebounds, pulled down rookie Luc Richard Mbah a Moute for his fifth foul.
Mbah a Moute, who finished with 14 points, hit both free throws to make it 95-93, but Pierce answered with a 3-pointer to give Boston a one-point lead.
Garnett picked up his sixth foul moments later and Dan Gadzuric, who replaced an ejected Andrew Bogut, dunked for Milwaukee’s only field goal in overtime, giving the Bucks a 97-96 lead with 1:07 left.
After the teams failed to score on Pierce’s missed layup and a turnover by the Bucks, Allen was fouled with 24 seconds left, hitting both free throws to make it 98-97.
Richard Jefferson, who had 14 points, then missed a jumper over Pierce, and Allen hit two more free throws.
Trailing 100-97 with 10 seconds left, the Bucks opted for a short jumper by Gadzuric that he missed instead of a 3-point attempt to tie. Pierce grabbed the rebound, hitting two more free throws to end it.
Milwaukee, already without leading scorer Michael Redd (right ankle) and Charlie Villanueva (hamstring strain), finished 1-for-10 in overtime after rallying from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
With the Celtics up 82-81, Pierce hit a jumper and Allen hit a layup for a five-point lead, but the Bucks came back without Bogut, who hit a layup and went hard into Garnett.
Garnett appeared to make contact with Bogut’s face with an open hand, but officials immediately stepped in, assessing a double technical as Bogut and Garnett continued glaring at each other with 3:58 left.
After officials conferred, the call stood and Bogut, who finished with 20 points, was ejected for his second technical after picking up one 5 minutes earlier in the quarter on a staredown with Leon Powe.
Nets 119, Hawks 107
ATLANTA – Devin Harris is feeling better. Just ask the Atlanta Hawks.
Harris scored 33 points, Vince Carter had 29 and the New Jersey Nets beat Atlanta 119-107 on Saturday night, completing a sweep of the two-day, home-and-home series.
The Nets lost three straight while Harris was out with a sprained left ankle. He returned Friday night to score 30 points in a 115-108 victory over the Hawks at New Jersey.
Cavaliers 105, Jazz 93
CLEVELAND – LeBron James scored 38 points, leading a second-half rally that gave the Cleveland Cavaliers their seventh straight victory, 105-93 over the short-handed Utah Jazz on Saturday night.
Mo Williams added 20 points for the Cavaliers, including a 3-pointer and a layup midway through the fourth quarter that pushed Cleveland’s lead to 95-84, its biggest since the first quarter.
76ers 110, Thunder 85
PHILADELPHIA – Thaddeus Young scored 23 points, Elton Brand and Andre Iguodala added 15 apiece, and the Philadelphia 76ers cruised past the struggling Oklahoma City Thunder, 110-85 on Saturday.
Samuel Dalembert contributed 13 points and 16 rebounds for the Sixers, who won their third straight game to even their record at 5-5.
One night after overcoming a 26-point deficit to win 94-92 at Indiana, Philadelphia had little trouble dispatching of the Thunder. Young shot 10-of-15 from the field and all 12 Sixers players scored.
Warriors 121, Clippers 103
LOS ANGELES – Undrafted rookie Anthony Morrow had 37 points and 10 rebounds in his first NBA start and Golden State beat the Los Angeles Clippers 121-103 on Saturday in the first meeting between Baron Davis and the Warriors’ Corey Maggette since they switched teams as free agents this summer.
Morrow, who averaged 7.7 points as a reserve in his other three games this season, played 42 minutes and was 15-for-20 from the field. The 6-foot-5 guard from Georgia Tech signed with the Warriors on July 25 after playing for their Summer League team. His total was the highest this season by a rookie, topping O.J. Mayo’s 33.
Morrow was the third player to score 30 or more points against the Clippers in their last three games, including Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki (33) and Sacramento’s Beno Udrih (30).
Andris Biedrins had 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Warriors, who blew a 14-point lead before pulling away early in the fourth quarter. Biedrins recorded his 16th consecutive double-double, the team’s longest streak since Nate Thurmond’s 18 straight in 1971-72. Stephen Jackson had 20 points and 10 assists.
Davis finished with 25 points and 11 assists for the Clippers, who also got nice efforts from Chris Kaman and Marcus Camby. Kaman had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and reserve Camby got 12 points and 11 boards. Cuttino Mobley finished with 19 points.
Maggette, playing his second game after missing the previous four with a strained left hamstring, had 17 points during a foul-plagued 26 minutes. He had two fouls in the first 2:03 and got his third with 3:24 left in the first quarter.
Maggette’s fourth foul came with 9:24 left in the third and Golden State leading 62-54. The Clippers then went on a 14-2 run to pull ahead 68-64 with 61/2 minutes left in the quarter, as Mobley capped the rally with a short fadeaway jumper.
Davis opted out of the final year of his contract with the Warriors in July, turning down $17 million and signing a five-year, $65 million contract with the Clippers on the same day Elton Brand left the Clippers with a year left on his contract and signed a five-year, $82 million deal with Philadelphia.
One day later, Maggette opted out of the final year of his contract with the Clippers – turning down $7 million to sign a five-year, $50 million contract with Golden State. The Clippers are off to a 1-8 start, while the Warriors are 4-6.
Kelenna Azubuike had 15 points for Golden State. The Clippers, who had visions of Azubuike playing backup small forward for them behind Al Thornton, signed the third-year shooting guard to an offer sheet on July 17. But the Warriors matched the three-year, $9 million deal seven days later.
