FARMINGTON – Pajama-clad students and their parents packed the W.G. Mallett School gymnasium Wednesday night to listen to author Elizabeth Bluemle read “Dogs on the Bed.”

“It’s a fun night out. It’s also relaxing,” parent Christine Hufnagel said of the 11th annual Prime Time Reading Night, which is part of Autumn Community Book Week. She carried her stuffed dog Sierra while her daughter Maggie Hufnagel, 7, and son Connor, 3, joined her for the evening of bedtime stories.

Bluemle told the children the book developed from her own two cocker spaniels finding their way on to her bed one night. Frustrated by their desire to take all the room, she got up and began to walk and think about the dogs, eventually putting her thoughts on paper.

Bluemle, owner of the Flying Pig Bookstore in Burlington, Vt., and Passamaquoddy author Alan Sockabasin shared their stories at the school this week as part of a school library fundraiser arranged by librarian Betsy Turcotte and Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers of Farmington.

On Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, the book store will host Donuts for Dads so fathers and children can browse through the titles, bookstore owner Kenny Brechner said.
