RANGELEY – Burglars broke into the Rangeley Pharmacy, cleaned out a narcotics cabinet and fled the scene in less than four minutes Friday night, making off with more than 2,500 pills.

The pills were a mix of Oxycodone, OxyContin, the amphetamine Vyvanse and a type of methadone, Police Officer Jared Austin said.

“It was a huge, huge, huge hit,” he said. “They knew right where to go; they knew the cabinet to go to.”

Austin was alerted Friday night at 8:49 p.m. that Seacoast Security had called the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to report motion alarms going off at the pharmacy at 2185 Main St. The security company called within one minute of hearing the alarm, Austin said. He was on the scene within three minutes of taking the call from the dispatcher.

“When I arrived, the front door had been pried open,” Austin said. Nothing but the contents of one cabinet had been taken.

Based on evidence at the scene, he believes there were at least two suspects and that they fled on foot heading north, down Main Street.

“We used a canine to track the suspects. The tracks end where there was probably a vehicle parked,” Austin said. That was in the parking lot of the Village Scrub Board, a laundromat.

The Rangeley Pharmacy, attached to the IGA, is the only pharmacy in town. The complex, owned by Bob Wentworth, had been empty about 20 minutes when the alarms sounded, Austin said.

Given the speed, it was clearly planned, he said. “We’re very concerned about all these pills hitting the street.”

Austin was unsure of the street value of the narcotics. Gerry Baril, who heads the local unit of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, estimated that at $1 per milligram, the street value would be at least $25,000.

Rangeley police are asking anyone who saw a car parked in the laundromat or any suspicious activity to call them at 864-3579.
