If the city decides to buy a new machine for its electric light station, Lewiston will be able to illuminate city hall, the three fire stations, the schoolhouses and all its public buildings as well as its streets.

A representative of an electrical house was in Lewiston to quote prices Thursday. The expense will not be over $2,000, it is thought, and several city officials, including Mayor Morey, believe it is a good investment. Gas and electric light bills against the city will be done away with.

50 years ago, 1958

An examination to fill an existing vacancy in the Auburn Fire Department will be held Dec. 30, it was announced last night by Alfred Baril, chairman of the Auburn Civil Service Commission.

The vacancy in the fire department was created in September by the resignation of Harold Jordan of 7 Gammon Ave. Jordan tendered his resignation Sept. 2 to become effective Sept. 7

Baril said last night that applications must be in the hands of City Clerk Leon H. Cole by 5 p.m. Dec. 19. The examination for the eligibility list will be held at 7 p.m., Dec. 30.

25 years ago, 1983

MEXICO – Seven members of the Ragtag Players, a Rumford-area drama group under the direction of Burton deFrees, gave a special presentation of “Celebration: Walt Whitman” at the Mexico High School Lecture hall Friday afternoon.

Besides high school English students, 21 Meroby Elementary reading enrichment students with enrichment teacher Cathy Melanson and teacher assistant Rose Desjardins were invited to attend the presentation.
