BROWNFIELD – Four people were arrested on burglary charges following an investigation into a series of break-ins in Brownfield.

The investigation by Maine State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office began at about 5 p.m. last Friday when police responded to an alarm at an unoccupied house on Burnt Meadow Pond Road.

“Two sets of tracks led out to the woods and the swamp,” said Sgt. Tim Holland.

Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Ontengco followed the tracks in the snow and found a woman and a juvenile at another house on Burnt Meadow Pond Road, Holland said.

Tammy Louise Chapman, 20, of 156 Main St., Brownfield, was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft and a count of criminal mischief. The juvenile was arrested on unspecified charges.

Ontengco had tracked the pair to a house where he noticed a broken window and an open garage door. Inside, police recovered stolen snowmobile equipment and alcohol. Holland said it appeared that the pair tried to steal a snowmobile but were unable to get it started.

Earlier this week, following interviews, police made two more arrests in connection with what they believe is a series of burglaries that may date back to Thanksgiving.

Richard William Thorne, 19, of 940 Pequawket Trail and Daniel Scott Foster, 18, of 238 Burnt Meadow Road, were arrested on Tuesday and charged with burglary and theft, according to police.

A stolen snowmobile and golf cart were recovered at one of the houses, Holland said.

The ongoing investigation involves break-ins at least three unoccupied houses that have occurred since Thanksgiving in Brownfield, which is in the southernmost part of Oxford County.
