LEWISTON – A police officer was in the right place at the right time shortly before noon to nab two suspects accused of snatching a purse from a woman walking on Walnut Street.

Patrol Officer Corey Jacques was near Horton and Walnut streets after a routine traffic stop. He saw a dark-colored SUV being driven erratically when he was flagged down by witnesses who reported seeing two men in the SUV grab a purse from an elderly woman near 80 Walnut St., Lt. Mark Cornelio wrote in a news release.

Mignonne Munro was en route to her landlord’s office to pay her rent, said Sean Watkins, owner of LA Property Management.

A postal carrier in the area also witnessed the robbery and got the SUV’s registration number, Watkins said.

Jacques caught up with the SUV and pulled it over at 35 Ash St., near Park Street. The purse allegedly stolen from the woman was found lying on the floor of the SUV.

Christopher Davis, 19, of 78 4th St., Auburn, and Joshua Cyr, 19, of 93 3rd St., Auburn, were arrested and charged with robbery. Bail for each was set at $1,000 cash.

In an interview with Detective Brian O’Malley at the Lewiston Police Department, Davis and Cyr admitted to their involvement in the robbery, Cornelio said. Davis said he drove the SUV and Cyr admitted to reaching out the window and snatching the purse as they drove past, Cornelio said.

The victim of the robbery was not injured and her purse was returned, he said.
