RUMFORD – The River Valley Technology Center will be the site for training northern Oxford County census takers.
The River Valley Growth Council board learned at its meeting Wednesday night that the 2010 census takers will use a portion of the technology center for training during the week of April 13.
Albert Niles, recruiting assistant for the U.S. Census, said by telephone Wednesday night that census takers will work for eight to 10 weeks. He said locally trained census takers will most likely work in the northern Oxford County area.
Statewide, he said about 6,000 people have been recruited to take some part in the population count, held every 10 years.
Beverly Crosby, administrative assistant for the growth council, said many people applied for the temporary jobs at the Maine CareerCenter, which is in the technology center building.
Growth council President Rich Allen said that discussions are under way between Community Dental, which leases space at the technology center, and York County Community College to train dental hygienists at the Rumford site.
In other matters, the council scheduled a committee meeting for noon March 19 to plan production of a DVD to promote the area. The council received $5,000 from Bangor Savings Bank and another $5,000 from Rumford for the project.
Also on Wednesday, the board learned:
• Discussions are underway with a storage company, a call center, and a wind farm company for use of space in the technology center building;
• Letters soliciting donations to operate the growth council and its projects will be going out to businesses; some funds have begun been received from member towns.
