FARMINGTON – Selectmen agreed 4-1 last week to try a Saturday morning town meeting next year.
A straw poll was taken during town meeting elections on March 9 to see how people felt about changing to a Saturday meeting. Traditionally, the meeting has been held on the second Monday evening in March.
People favored the idea 102-66.
Selectmen have authority to set the time and date of the meeting. After considering the straw poll, they decided to give it a try with the option of reassessing the change later.
Selectman Dennis Pike said it should at least be tried out of respect for the poll.
Some selectmen wondered if more people would attend town meeting or if it would be a different set of voters than who attend Monday night sessions.
“We should give it a shot and see how many really come … see if more than 150 people show up,” Selectman Nancy Porter said.
The board agreed to hold the meeting at 9 a.m. on the third Saturday in March after Town Manager Richard Davis recommended pushing it to a later Saturday in order to be sure to have enough time to complete town reports.
Following a town ordinance that requires a written ballot, the board agreed to hold elections on Friday, the day before the meeting.
Davis did not anticipate additional expenses by changing the date but some Saturday activities at the Community Center where the meeting is held may have to be rescheduled.
