NORWAY – The Stone-Smart Post, American Legion, and Auxiliary met March 11 to observe the 90th birthday of the American Legion.

A potted beef supper was prepared and served by auxiliary members Rose Moulton, Sandy Pendexter and Beulah Ayer, assisted by other members who brought in salads and other items for the meal.

After supper, Commander George Tibbetts presented Gene Bickford and Neil Dow with 50-year membership certificates.

Following their tours of duty in the armed service, Dow during World War II and Bickford during the Korean War, they returned to their home town of Norway.

Dow became an attorney, and after graduation he became a member of the family-owned Dow’s Law Office in Norway. At one time he served as judge of municipal court in Norway.

Bickford became a member of the Maine State Police, now retired. He has served the American Legion Department of Maine in several capacities and was the department commander in 2004. For four years he served as National Executive Committeeman Alternate.

The newly formed Legionnaire of the Month Committee, consisting of Ralph Moulton, Arnold Pendexter and David Tilley, made their first presentation of the award to Randy Henley.

Henley has been a member of the post for nine years and is a past commander. He is serving as the post Americanism officer. In making the presentation, Moulton said Henley puts the flags out along Main Street for special occasions and holidays. He is always willing to help on projects, Moulton said.

Thelma Denlinger, auxiliary president, gave the Legion with a check for $500 to go toward the fuel costs. The Auxiliary also had a birthday cake, cut by Denlinger and Tibbetts. Following the presentations, each organization held a meeting.

Bob Sessions reported he had visited Lawrence White and James Baker at the Veterans’ Home and both thought they would be going home in the near future.

Officers for the 2009-2010 Legion year that starts in June were elected as follows: George Tibbetts, commander; Ernest Clifford, first vice commander; David Tilley, second vice commander; Cory Millett, adjutant; Ralph Moulton, finance officer; Robert Sessions, service officer; Randal Henley, Americanism officer; Arnold Pendexter, assistant Americanism officer; Erland Twitchell, sergeant-at-arms; John Morgan, chaplain; and John Rideout, historian.

It was voted to sponsor a boy to Boys State. Members will attempt to find another sponsor so there will be two boys attending in June. It was also voted to make a donation to the Abenaki Boy Scout District.
