AUGUSTA – Ten hunters from Maine and across the nation bid more than $94,000 to each win a chance to hunt moose here during the fall hunt.

All of the money, which totals $94,843, goes to partial scholarships to help send Maine children to the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond. It was formerly called the Maine Conservation Camp.

The five-day experience for boys and girls ages 10-14, also include sessions at the Conservation Camp at the Greenland Point Center in Princeton, according to Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokeswoman Deborah Turcotte.

More than 30 people participated in Wednesday’s auction. The 10 successful bids ranged from $9,007 to $10,313.

Department Commissioner Roland D. Martin said the winning hunters were doing more than just bidding on an opportunity to “participate in the hunt of a lifetime in the outdoors that they love.”

“They are giving children a chance to learn valuable outdoor skills and gain a greater appreciation for the Maine outdoors as well,” Martin said.
