LEWISTON – Methyl H. Sturtevant, 78, of Winthrop, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 7, at Central Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Lewiston, on Oct. 20, 1930, the daughter of Merle and Verna (Akerley) Hodgkins.

She graduated from Edward Little High School in 1949, Farmington Teachers’ College in 1953, and continued her education toward a master’s degree in elementary education. She taught home economics in Wiscasset for 2 years before marrying Roger Sturtevant.

After their marriage in Auburn on July 2, 1955, she began her 22-year career as a kindergarten teacher in South Portland, where she was also a long-time resident.

She was a member of the Western Maine Farmington Alumni Association and the Winthrop Congregational Church, where she served as deacon and on several boards and committees.

She enjoyed being with family and friends and liked to travel, enjoying trips to Florida, Europe, Hawaii and Alaska.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Roger Sturtevant, of Winthrop; her son, Stephen Sturtevant and his wife, Lisa, and their daughter, Chelsea, of Mason, Ohio; her daughter, Mary Sturtevant and her son and daughter, Peter and Courtney Williamson, of Gardiner, and Peter and Courtney’s father, Mark Williamson; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; and a brother and sister, Duane Hodgkins and Marian Reed.
