BOSTON (AP) – Former Boston Marathon champion Bill Rodgers is heading back to the starting line on Monday for another go at the race he won four times.

Rodgers hasn’t run the race since 1999, when he went for the 50-and-over American record but dropped out at the top of Heartbreak Hill. Now 61, Rodgers says it still bothers him that his last marathon was one he didn’t finish.

Rodgers won the world’s most prestigious marathon in 1975 and then for three straight years from 1978-80. His victories helped jumpstart the popularity of distance running in the United States.

No American has won the Boston Marathon since Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach won the women’s race in 1985. The last man to win Boston was Greg Meyer in 1983.
