RUMFORD – The Senior Center is looking for more Greater Rumford Seniors members. Marie Marcoux said they are looking for “semi-seniors” to join in the events.
The Rumford Seniors were first started in 1969 with 40 members. Presently there are more than 200 members and the average age is 80-plus.
With a younger group joining, members could introduce new energy and ideas, said Marcoux. The yearly dues are $10.
The seniors go on trips and hold several fundraising events during the year, with a special bingo planned for June 6. A portion of the money will be given to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department to help with TRIAD, a picnic event held yearly for Oxford County seniors.
The group holds a Christmas fair every year and dinners with entertainment events, one on Friday, April 24. Seniors also hold a weekly nickel bingo. The public is welcome to events.
Members would also like to have an event that would include children, parents and grandparents. Ideas would be welcome.
Seniors meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month, and everyone brings a potluck dish. There are speakers and presentations at the meetings. Membership is open to Rumford residents and all surrounding towns.
Two other groups utilized the Senior Center. SeniorsPlus serves a meal every Thursday, and Ralph Santos leads the River Valley Social Club.
