Teenagers team up to sing a cappella at Bates
LEWISTON – Three local high-school groups will come together Saturday, May 2, to sing a cappella at the Olin Arts Center at Bates College.
Performing at the Joining Voices concert will be Vocal ELoquence from Edward Little High School, Auburn; Diaboli Musicae from Lewiston High School; and The Mt. Blue Voices from Mt. Blue High School, Farmington.
The program includes a cappella versions of songs by the Beach Boys, the Beatles, James Taylor and the Eagles, spirituals and classic doo-wop, such as “Come Go with Me” and “Blue Moon” – and maybe even some Bob Dylan and Jimmie Hendrix.
Richard Rau, Vocal ELoquence co-director and concert producer, was a longtime member of the local quartet Top Forty, which performed a cappella standards, doo-wop, pop and jazz. He has been involved for 16 years with the annual a cappella Battle of the Blends concert, a fundraiser for the Maine Music Society.
“It is becoming the norm for high schools to have an a cappella chorus. They learn great vocal techniques and interact with each other musically. They start writing their own arrangements. When our students get to college, they are well prepared to join an a cappella group,” Rau said.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are required. They are $5 for adults, $3 for children and students. For reservations, call 225-5222 and leave a message, including your name, phone number and number of tickets desired; or go online to www.joiningvoices.webs.com and complete the reservation form. You will get a confirmation of your request and can pick up and pay for your tickets at the door. Tickets are also be available from the singers of each of the three groups.
