The St. Dominic Regional High School boys’ lacrosse team had 20/20 vision last week.

That news isn’t as good as it sounds, but it’s all part of the learning process for a program that is becoming a consistent Class B contender.

Last Tuesday, the Saints extended their season-opening winning streak to three games with a 20-1 trouncing of Noble, a team that beat St. Dom’s by a goal last spring.

Four days later, a halftime lead evaporated into a 20-6 loss to Falmouth.

St. Dom’s, which defeated Freeport and York by two goals each, continues to improve with one of its smallest rosters ever.

“Twenty total players, JV and varsity. About a dozen of them are freshmen and sophomores,” St. Dom’s coach Jim Dock said of his team. “The numbers have been up and down the entire time I’ve been here. But this team, they all show up for practice. They’re hard workers.”

Trevar Haefele is off to a monstrous start with 24 goals and 12 assists. Tim Day, a transfer from the Hall-Dale district, has been a pleasant surprise with nine goals and 10 set-ups.

Part of St. Dom’s development might be due to familiarity.

Dock coaches three sets of brothers – Trevar and Troy Haefele, Ben and Matt Adams, and Dylan and Cody Rodrigue.

“We even have a third Rodrigue who’s not related,” said Dock, now in his sixth season. “The kids joke about it. Now when I read the list alphabetically and say, for instance, ‘Haefele, Haefele,’ they know which one is which.”

Trevar Haefele shares the prolific first forward line with the Adams siblings. Dylan Rodrigue, a sophomore, has shifted from midfield to defense to help out freshman goalkeeper Cody Rodrigue.

Finding the range

High school programs with a recent history of contending for conference, regional and state championships don’t usually celebrate moral victories.

Lewiston’s effort May 1 in a road loss at undefeated Messalonskee might have rated an exception, however.

The Blue Devils dropped to 1-3 that day, but their performance provided the first glimpse that a young team might be catching on to new coach John Brubaker’s philosophy.

“We’ve gotten better with time of possession as the season’s progressed. We did that at Messalonskee. We came up a little short at the end of it, but I told the guys that was our most complete game of the year up to that point,” Brubaker said. “All we needed to do was simulate what we did that game with a little added intensity. They rose to the occasion.”

Two one-sided wins later, Lewiston is back in the Eastern Class A and Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference hunt. Eleven different players registered a goal or an assist in those two triumphs, a 10-2 verdict over Oxford Hills and a 10-3 breeze past Edward Little.

“To simulate it in practice is one thing, but to do it in game speed is totally different,” Brubaker said.

“Once we got them to grow into the role, we started to see results.”

Scaling the heights

Two programs at different ends of the Class B boys’ spectrum had equally great reasons to celebrate Friday.

Mt. Blue stayed undefeated and on top of Eastern Class B with a dramatic 12-11 win at Morse. Derek Rowe scored four goals and Zac Conlogue netted the game-winner to help the Cougars (6-0) rally from a 10-8 deficit at the end of the third quarter.

Mountain Valley broke into the win column for the first time this season with its 14-5 rout of Camden Hills. Austin Horne and Matt Mowatt each registered a hat trick for the Falcons.
