JAY – School Committee members voted Thursday to have elementary school secretary Susan Gagnon fill the position of payroll/accounts payable clerk in the Central Office beginning July 1, Superintendent Robert Wall said Monday.

Gagnon, a longtime school secretary, will be paid $16 an hour and work year-round, he said.

School secretaries do not work year-round.

Gagnon will be responsible for doing payroll, payables and human resources, Wall said.

The School Department plans to eliminate one school secretary in the 2009-10 year but needed someone to fill the Central Office position.

The job was posted in-house and money for the position was included in the budget that voters approved in April.

Wall recommended Gagnon be hired after interviews were conducted.

The committee also voted to eliminate a substitute caller position as a result of change in local conditions effective June 10, Wall said.

The board also accepted a proposal from Precision Tanks Inc. for $3,890 to replace the existing tank monitoring system for an underground heating fuel tank at the elementary school, Wall said.

Of that amount, $3,200 will come from a short-term capital improvement plan account and $690 will come from a long-term capital plan improvement account, he said.

The board also accepted Wall’s nominations for summer teaching and educational technician positions and a schoolwide Affirmative Action Committee.

Elementary School Principal Christopher Hollingsworth will fill the affirmative action officer position. Appointed to the committee for two years were Donna Labbe, Randy Easter and Tin Collins. Appointments for one year were Bill Biliouris, Sylvia Desjardins, Joe Moore, Lynn Smith and Jim Shink.

Approved to fill summer teaching positions of 18 or 12 sessions were Judy Macomber, Tammy Deering, Joyce Quirrion, Diane Berry and Christina Bamford.

Filling summer positions for educational technicians for 18 or 12 sessions were Marianne Medcoff, Bonita Melcher, Kerry Jackson and Alsion Gingras.

The committee postponed action on salaries for non-unit personnel, or positions not included in a bargaining unit, for 2009-10 until they meet with the group to discuss the agreement further, Wall said.
