100 years ago, 1909

Arrangements for the water carnival to be held at Lake Auburn next Wednesday are progressing well and the affair, the first of its kind ever held at the lake, promises to be a grand success. The carnival will begin in the afternoon and continue during the evening. Bands will be in attendance and other attractions will be in evidence.

50 years ago, 1959

Mrs. Lola Freteschi Thompson of Lake Worth, Fla., was speaker last evening at a meeting of the Lewiston-Auburn Modeling Association held at the Philharmonic Studio, Lisbon Street, Lewiston. Mrs Thompson, a former resident of Lewiston, described modeling techniques in Florida as compared with modeling in Maine and Boston. Following her address, the speaker gave each girl tips and pointers on walking and pivoting. The group will meet again on Aug. 19 at the Philharmonic Studio.

25 years ago, 1984

LOS ANGELES — Joan Benoit took a chance, nobody took after her and the slim ironwoman took the first Olympic women’s marathon as if she were taking a solitary stroll. It was the best women’s marathon field ever assembled, and Benoit was, by far, the best of the best. She exploded into the lead under gray skies at about the 3-mile mark and maintained the pace under sunny skies for the last half of the 26-mile, 385 yard endurance test.
