MECHANIC FALLS — Mechanic Falls-Minot-Poland Adult Education is offering a variety of general interest courses this fall. Areas of interest include health and fitness, home improvement and finances. Courses offered in October are:
Solar Panels: How to Build and Cut Heating Costs: Solar hot air is the cheapest solar technology to implement and manage with the quickest savings payback. A panel will be on display along with the plans and a parts list. Learn more about the energy saving technology from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 6. Fee is $6.
Fix It Yourself, for Women: Basic tool box must-haves and how they are used to complete a variety of projects will be discussed. Participants will learn how to find a stud in the wall, fix holes in sheetrock and replace ceramic tiles. The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 21. Fee is $6.
Maine Handicapped Skiing: Learn more about the free programming that promotes year round education and training for individuals with physical disabilities in order to develop skills and provide enjoyment through active recreation. There will be a demonstration of both winter and summer adaptive equipment, along with a DVD presentation. Class will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8.
Heartsaver AED: Participants will receive training in cardio-pulminary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED). Appropriate training will be given for adults, children and infants. Students will receive a Heartsaver AED course completion card upon successful completion and skills testing. This is a physically demanding course; wear comfortable clothing. Class will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19. Fee is $50.
Calming Your Child and Yourself: The class will teach simple, gentle hand holds that will help calm. Attendees will learn about the art of self-knowing and tuning into the body’s energy. May Scott has practiced this art for more than 20 years and has used it successfully as a Headstart teacher. Class will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.
Fee is $6.
German New Medicine: Discovered by a German doctor, the class will offer a new understanding of “diseases” based on five biological laws. An overview of an entirely different medical model. Class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. Fee is $6.
QuickBooks: Computerized accounting software provides a practical approach to bookkeeping for small businesses. Computer literacy is required. Knowledge of basic accounting principles is helpful. Class will meet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 8 through Nov. 5. Fee is $40.
Notary Public: Attendees will learn about becoming a sworn public official with the powers to perform a number of official acts. History, qualifications, procedures and the application process will be discussed. Class will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 14 and 21. Fee is $10 plus $8 book fee paid to instructor.
NextGen College Investing: The informational seminar will be presented by a NextGen Program Officer from the Finance Authority of Maine. The course will offer an overview of the various federal/state programs, grants and other financing options available to help families prepare for college costs, while leveraging financial aid opportunities. The free class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.
