100 years ago, 1910

If a meeting of the Lewiston Fire Commission had been held last evening as planned, a delegation of firemen would have asked for a raise in their salaries. No meeting was held, however, owing to a quorum not being present.

The committee which has been selected to confer with the fire commissioners relative to the matter are I.L. Robbins, James Heffernan, T. Malenfant, Samuel Stewart and Joseph Maillet.

50 years ago, 1960

Lewiston Fire Lt. Thomas O. Mower checked out Engine One yesterday and found everything in tip-top shape.

It was thought the pumper’s pressure regulators might not be working properly, Chief Roland G. Dumais explained. Lt. Mower took the unit to a water hole on Grove Street for the testing.

The crew of Engine Three also went there for a pre-fire planning course. Because there are no hydrants in the area, the firemen discussed possible fire-fighting action using this water hole.

25 years ago, 1985

A former Afghanistan guerrilla will speak in Lewiston Thursday on “Guerrilla Warfare in Afghanistan.”

Yasin Ahmady, who now works for an insurance company in Portland and attends Westbrook College, will speak to the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club at noon in Steckino’s Heritage House.

He was a medical student in Kabul when the Russians attacked his country. He joined the guerrillas and fought with them in the hills before leaving. He lived in West Germany for two years before coming to the United States under a refugee program.
