LEWISTON — American Legion Post 22 will honor all veterans who were involved in the invasion and battle of Iwo Jima, which began Feb. 19, 1945 and finally ended March 26, 1945, at its monthly membership meeting. The United States marines lost 6,891 men and over 18,000 were wounded. There were only a total of 22,000 Japanese on the island (that was only 4.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide) during the battle and only 212 were taken prisoners. The monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Center at 145 Birch St. All veterans attending should contact Jerry DerBoghosian at 782-5700 or 353-7435. The committee planning the honoring occasion are as follows: sitting, left to right, Bert Mathieu, First Vice Commander, who served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific WWII; Raymond Allen, Commander, who served during the Korean War; Jerry DerBoghosian, Adjutant, who served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific WWII.
