PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Administrators at the University of Southern Maine are considering a proposal to reduce the number of schools and colleges and save about $750,000 a year.

The proposal would reduce from eight to five the number of schools and colleges at the Portland-based school, eliminating three academic deans, each of whom costs about $210,000 a year in pay and benefits and an administrative assistant who costs about $40,000 a year.

The Portland Press Herald says the proposal doesn’t indicate which positions would be cut.

Once finalized, the proposal will be submitted next month to the University of Maine System trustees.
