RUMFORD — Town voters are being asked to visit the polls from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13, in Rumford Falls Auditorium at the town office at 145 Congress St. to re-vote the 2010-11 Welfare Budget.
By a 965-727 tally at the June town meeting polls, a majority rejected raising and appropriating $70,021, which was recommended for the Welfare Budget by selectmen and the Budget Committee.
Because the budgetary article wasn’t approved, selectmen were required to establish a new budgetary article. They did this at their June 17 meeting, voting to fund and operate the Welfare Department budget with $60,000.
If that, too, fails to be approved, the process will be repeated until the article is passed in some amount, because state law requires that Rumford and other Maine towns have welfare budgets.
