WILTON — Police used pepper spray to restrain a Wilton man on Sunday when he resisted arrest, Police Chief Dennis Brown said.

Richard Bickford, 41, was arrested on charges of violating conditions of release and failure to submit to arrest, Brown said.

After the department received a report that Bickford was violating a condition of his release and was armed with a knife, officer Josh King responded to a Davis Court residence.

Although Bickford gave an alias, King determined it was Bickford and that he was violating release conditions. When King attempted to arrest him, he resisted and the officer used pepper spray. A search revealed he also had a knife on him, Brown said.

Bickford was treated and released from Franklin Memorial Hospital and then taken to Franklin County Detention Center. He was released Tuesday with time served.
