DURHAM — A Bates College student and her passenger were taken to Maine Medical Center by Durham Fire and Rescue after the vehicle she was driving collided with a dump truck at the intersection of Hallowell Road and Runaround Pond Road on Monday.
Lisbon police officer Richard St. Amant, who investigated the crash, identified the drivers as Samantha Rothberg, 19, of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Jacques Belanger, 64, of Lewiston.
Rothberg was driving south on Runaround Pond Road, approaching the Hallowell intersection, and Belanger was driving east on Hallowell Road, St. Amant said.
Thinking it was a four-way-stop intersection, Rothberg told the officer she stopped at the stop sign and, believing the truck was going to stop, proceeded into the intersection “and failed to yield to the dump truck,” St. Amant said. Both she and her passenger, Gemma Marden, 19, complained of pain. Belanger was not injured.
Rothberg’s 2009 Honda CRV was demolished. Damage to the right front of the 1984 Mack dump truck owned by J.B. Trucking was estimated at $2,500.
