OLD ORCHARD BEACH – On a warm, sunny autumn Sunday afternoon, the Lewiston Lumberjaxx worked their record to 5-1 in the Frozen Ropes Fall 12U League with a 15-3 rout of Old Orchard Beach.
After not being able to find their bats in their last contest versus Oxford Hills, the ‘Jaxx came out swinging against OOB, scoring both early and often. They scored the game’s first run in the top of the first inning on hits by Gage Cote and Hunter Landry along with some timely base-running.
Staked to the lead, starter Damien St.Pierre made quick work of OOB’s line-up with a 1-2-3 inning, striking out the leadoff hitter and forcing two infield outs.
Lewiston continued making consistent contact in the second on base knocks by Jean-Luc Dostie, St. Pierre, Jalen Allison, and a two-run single by Isaac Escobar.
Escobar finished with three RBIs.
The Lumberjaxx led 6-0 after scoring two more runs in the third. OOB responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Two quick singles and a walk later, the bases were full.
St.Pierre almost escaped the inning unscathed, but he plunked the next batter for the first run. OOB plated another on a wild pitch.
Hits by Dostie and Jason Gonzalez helped tally three more in the fourth before the bats took a respite until the seventh. That’s when the wheels came off for Old Orchard, with five walks and Cote’s two-run double adding up to five more runs.
St. Pierre fanned four and allowed only two runs en route to his first win of the year. He was helped by solid relief from Kaleb Morrisette (three strikeouts), Landry and Austin Merritt (four Ks).
Gonzalez, Escobar and Cote each had three hits for the Lumberjaxx. Bailey and Thomas were the repeat hitters for Old Orchard.
The Lumberjaxx play a twinbill at home Saturday at Elliot Ave. Little League versus Oxford Hills, the only team to deal them a loss this season. Check www.lewistonlumberjaxx.com for game times.
