RUMFORD — A Diabetes Fair is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13, at Rumford Hospital.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Jeffrey Lynds, MD, will review medications with fair participants who bring their current medications with them or who bring a complete medications list, including dosage, schedule and any other pertinent information. The review may include such topics as medications purposes and possible interactions with other medications or supplements.
Lynds is in his third and final year of the Central Maine Medical Center Rural Track Residency Program. He earned his doctor of medicine degree from Saint Georges University in Grenada and, prior to attending medical school, worked as an emergency medical technician in both Maine and North Dakota.
Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, podiatrist, will offer free foot exams, assisted by Barbara MacGregor, RN, BSN, the hospital’s certified diabetes educator. Orthotics professionals from Sound Limbs will be on hand to display aides and explain how they can help people with diabetes.
Flu shots will be available for a fee, which can be charged to insurances or paid for when registering at the fair. Participants who want the flu vaccine must call 369-1130 in advance to register and bring their insurance cards with them.
Student nurses from the Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing and Health Professions will administer the vaccine and also offer free blood pressure checks to all participants.
A variety of short presentations of interest to people with diabetes and their loved ones are scheduled throughout the morning. Rumford Hospital Therapy Services Physical Therapist Susan Santucci will give a presentation on exercise for people with diabetes; hospital Registered Dietitian Jane Wardwell will speak on nutrition; and Tim Dolan, who races bicycles cross country with the sanofi aventis Team Type 2, will talk about the challenges he has faced with diabetes.
Free bone density screenings will be available and pharmaceutical and diabetic aide vendors will display and explain some of newest medications and devices to help people with diabetes.
The Diabetes Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Specialty Clinics on the second floor of Rumford Hospital. It is free and open to the public.
Participants who would like foot exams, brown bag medication reviews or bone density screenings must sign up for the free appointments at the registration desk on the day of the event.
Light refreshments and raffle prizes will be available.
